Flash Poll: Pundits Grade Trump’s Speech

For Immediate Release – July 22, 2016 – Immediate reaction from Michigan political insiders to Donald Trump’s acceptance speech to the Republican National Convention is in, and it’s not good.  In a flash poll taken in the hours immediately following Thursday night’s address, 35 percent of pundits polled gave Trump’s speech a letter grade of either a D (23 percent) or an F (12 percent).

Thirteen percent disagreed and said the speech earned an A, with 10 percent each giving a grade of B or C.  12 percent didn’t watch.

“Trump needed to hit a home run yesterday and to really appeal to the general electorate,” Dennis Denno, of Denno Research said.  “Instead, the Pundits are saying that Trump missed another opportunity to be presidential.”

Additionally, the Pundit Poll asked GOP respondents to the flash poll:  As a Republican, do you support of the party’s nominee or are you #NeverTrump?

Forty-six percent said #NeverTrump.  23 percent said they would support the party’s nominee.  30 percent were Unsure or did not answer

“Trump was Trump,” Matt Resch, President of Resch Strategies, said.  “And from the beginning of this campaign people have either loved it or hated it.  Thursday reinforced it.”

The Pundit Poll is a new survey on the latest political news and issues in Michigan. The survey uses emails to collect the compiled and confidential responses from political strategists, consultants, and insiders across Michigan, with the goal of offering an insider’s look at the political issues facing the state. A full list of the nearly 100 pundits in the poll can be found at: www.thepunditpoll.com.

Methodology:

This was a Resch Strategies/Denno Research survey of Michigan political experts, pundits, and members of the media. 101 respondents were invited and 51 responded. The survey was emailed Thursday, July 21, immediately after the speech, and the survey was closed Friday, July 22 at 9 a.m.
